Julie Neill is an artist who has always been fascinated by the transformative power of light.
Combining her background in fine art and interior design, and working out of her New Orleans studio, Julie created a collection of bespoke lighting that she produced for over 26 years that caught the attention of Visual Comfort, a leader in the lighting industry.
It is her belief that a light fixture should bring illumination to a space in a way that lights up the spirit as well as the room.
For Julie, lighting is where it all begins. From a practical standpoint, every room needs a light source first. She likes to take the opportunity to fill that need in the most beautiful and artful way possible.
Combining her background in fine art and interior design, and working out of her New Orleans studio, Julie created a collection of bespoke lighting that she produced for over 25 years. This experience gave her a deep knowledge of both the art and the craft of lighting and product design.
“My design aesthetic grows out of my training as an artist.
Although I create lighting from many genres, it all grows out of a dedication to proportion, composition, lines and the creative use of materials.”
JULIE NEILL
Julie draws inspiration from her beloved New Orleans.
“New Orleans is a great source of inspiration for me. The architecture, the foliage, the history of the city and the any creative people who live here feed my soul. There is no way to live in New Orleans and not be inspired. My soul lives in New Orleans, and I design from within my soul. With this spiritual approach to design, I feel called to bring light into the world in the most beautiful way.”
Her designs are at once classically inspired, sculptural and imbued with a love of natural forms. This outlook translates seamlessly in Julie's
lighting collection for Visual Comfort.
“My collection for Visual Comfort is the natural progression from my custom work. I love collaborating with the Visual Comfort team to promote my aesthetic of “Traditional with a Twist” and “Classic with an Artisan Feel.” I'm inspired to design things that are artistic but able to be easily placed in interiors. My Talia chandelier is the perfect example of this. Classic, artisan and elegant but presented in a fresh, lighthearted and approachable way.”
Working with Visual Comfort has allowed Julie to create many pieces with new materials and techniques that enable her to bring her visions to life in ways that weren't possible within the capabilities of her custom studio and has made her fixtures more widely available.
Partnering with her daughter Isabelle has allowed Julie to create a full circle showing the beautiful spaces that our lighting gets to live in by featuring the talented designers that we have the pleasure of working with.
